Custom Fixed Heritage Awnings

Zimmermann, Claremont

Contemporary retail fit-out with heritage detailing

Zimmermann Claremont is located on St Quentin Avenue within Perth’s Claremont retail precinct, occupying a corner site with frontage to east and south elevations. The eastern façade faces a public square and contains the main entry, while the southern elevation has the street frontage.

Designed by Studio McQualter, the project resides in to a dense retail streetscape and responds with a restrained façade informed by traditional proportions, rendered detailing and a muted material palette. External elements are integrated into the façade composition, contributing to both street presence and environmental performance.

Façade treatment is consistent across both frontages. At ground level, planter boxes introduce greenery along the street edge, supported by external wall lighting in a muted green finish.

Selecting Sun Shading

Shade Factor worked with the design team to develop a series of custom fixed Heritage awnings. The solution was tailored to the façade, resolving varying window sizes across ground and first floor levels.

The awnings reference traditional awning types through proportion and detailing, with metalwork produced using period methods, such as casting and brazing. This type of detailing compliments the rendered façade language while maintaining contemporary structural performance. Inspired by the shading treatments of European heritage buildings, the awnings reinforce the Zimmermann brand's romantic aesthetic and attention to craftsmanship.

The façade palette comprises a moss green finish with warm cream awnings, providing tonal contrast across both elevations while maintaining a restrained overall composition.

Fabrication includes 304 grade stainless steel components with a blackened steel finish and brass details, with Warema customised awning fabric used across all units.

As Bruce Nockles (then Meacham Nockles McQualter) notes in relation to the development of custom architectural product solutions, “you want the outcome to look a certain way, so you adapt it and work with a manufacturing partner prepared to push the boundaries of their traditional product to achieve the desired aesthetic.”

A total of 15 bespoke Heritage awnings were installed across both façades, incorporating both 60-degree and 90-degree rotations.
